AVA was responsible for the HVAC and plumbing design, and for adding air conditioning to the elevator rooms to improve availability
This Design-Bid-Build project was for the design and installation of additional elevators at three key stations that were built thirty years ago. This project would bring the stations into compliance with the current Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements, and through redundancy mitigate the impacts of out-of-service elevators while improving capacity. The challenges here were to fit the controls, communications, and SCADA into existing underground facilities – which in most cases were not designed to accommodate the elevator additions. The other significant issue was fitting the HVAC equipment into the existing underground rooms, extracting the heat and enhancing the ventilation. There was also extensive coordination work outside the stations with the City to accommodate the elevator and HVAC compressor units in what is now a dense urban environment with mega development projects and Grand Park Los Angeles that is an outdoor concert venue.
