East Side Access at Grand Central Terminal NYC
Under Grand Central Station
The East Side Access (ESA) project, one of the most ambitious public works undertakings in New York City, extends the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) to a new terminal beneath Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan. Spanning over two miles, the project provides direct rail service to Manhattan’s East Side, significantly reducing the need for subway transfers for commuters. The new terminal, named Grand Central Madison, features eight tracks and four platforms spread across two levels, situated 100 feet below street level. The project supports improved connectivity with expanded LIRR services to destinations like Jamaica Station and integrates seamlessly with other regional rail and transit systems.
Leadership in Complex Transit Development
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) spearheaded the project, collaborating with various stakeholders to overcome logistical, technical, and engineering challenges. The endeavor included building extensive tunnels, modernizing infrastructure, and addressing delays that pushed the project’s original 2009 opening date to 2023. The $11.1 billion cost reflects its scope, which includes enhancements to the LIRR Main Line and the introduction of cutting-edge station facilities. Designed to accommodate increased commuter volumes, ESA is expected to significantly boost the efficiency and appeal of public transit in the region.
